The name means “house of faith”, a nod to the Druze hermitage that once stood on the ridge. The village faces Deir el Qamar across a terraced valley of olive and fruit trees, and the two make an easy pair for a day out from Beirut.

What makes Beiteddine worth the drive is how much is packed into a short distance: an early 19th century palace with a museum and hammam, Lebanon’s former mountain capital a few minutes away, a quirky hand-built castle on the road between them, and the cedar forests of the Shouf Biosphere Reserve higher up the mountain.

What to see

Beiteddine Palace

Emir Bashir II Shihab, ruler of the Mount Lebanon Emirate, built the palace between 1788 and 1818 after moving his court here from Deir el Qamar. It mixes Lebanese mountain architecture with Ottoman and Italian touches, and it is laid out as a sequence of courtyards:

The outer courtyard, a vast open square of about 107 by 45 metres, framed on one side by the two-storey guest wing (al-Madafa).

Dar el Wousta, the central section, with arcades, fountains, mandaloun windows and cedar-wood rooms decorated with Arabic calligraphy.

Dar el Harim, the private quarters, with the family rooms, kitchens and a domed hammam at its northern edge.

The shaded tomb of Emir Bashir and his first wife, just beyond the hammam.

After 1840 the Ottomans used the palace as a government building, and in 1943 it became the official summer residence of Lebanon’s president. It was badly damaged during the civil war and has since been restored. Today parts of the palace are open to visitors, and the museum shows a large collection of ancient mosaics all year. In July the courtyards turn into the stage of the Beiteddine Art Festival, though its 2026 edition was cancelled.

Deir el Qamar

Five minutes across the valley, Deir el Qamar sits at about 850 metres and was the seat of Emir Fakhreddine II from the 1590s. Around the Midane, its old jousting square with a 19th century fountain, you will find the Fakhreddine mosque (1493) with its octagonal minaret, the silk khan of 1595, the serail that now houses the Marie Baz Wax Museum, and the church of Saydet el Talle. The town has been protected as a national historic monument since 1945, and its stepped lanes and red-tiled houses are some of the best preserved in the country.

Moussa Castle

On the hill between Deir el Qamar and Beiteddine stands Moussa Castle, a mock-medieval fortress that Moussa Abdel Karim al-Maamari dreamed up as a teenager and built over decades. The foundation stone was laid in 1962 and it opened in 1969. Children tend to love it, and the inscriptions on its stones say a lot about the man who built it.

Moukhtara and Baakline

A short drive south, Moukhtara is home to the historic palace of the Jumblatt family, seen from the road above the village. Baakline, the first capital of the Maan emirs, is home to the Bkerzay pottery village and to the embroidery workshop of designer Salim Azzam.

A suggested day

Morning

Leave Beirut early and head south along the coast to Damour, then climb into the Chouf. Start at Beiteddine Palace before the tour groups, taking your time in the hammam and the mosaic halls.

Afternoon

Stop at Moussa Castle on the way to Deir el Qamar, then walk the Midane, the khan and the lanes behind the mosque. Have lunch in the village or at your guesthouse.

Evening

If you are staying the night, drive up to the cedars of Maasser el Shouf or Barouk for late light over the mountains. In summer, check whether a festival night is on in Beiteddine or Deir el Qamar.

Where to eat and stay

Staying over is the best way to enjoy the Chouf, as evenings are cool and quiet. Bouyouti in Maasser Beiteddine has stone cottages, gardens and a table d’hôte of home-style Lebanese food. In Deir el Qamar, Beyt El Jabal offers rooms in a restored stone house, and Beit El Qamar Boutique Hotel looks over the town. For gifts, pick up cedar honey from Asalli in Barouk or za’atar and sumac from Mountain Boons. Local wine comes from Château Florentine.

The Chouf kitchen is mountain food: kibbeh, freshly baked markouk bread, kishk, wild greens, labneh and seasonal fruit from the terraces. Our Chouf recipes guide covers what to order.

Practical tips

Wear good shoes: palace floors are polished stone and Deir el Qamar’s lanes are steep.

The palace is a presidential residence, so some wings may be closed. Check with the Ministry of Tourism or a local guide before you go.

Dress modestly if you plan to enter the mosque or churches in Deir el Qamar.

Winter brings snow to the upper Chouf. The cedar roads can close after storms, while Beiteddine itself usually stays reachable.

Check current travel advice before your trip, as conditions in Lebanon can change quickly.

Nearby

The Shouf Biosphere Reserve covers about 5 percent of Lebanon and protects the cedar forests of Barouk, Maasser el Shouf and Ain Zhalta. Read our guides to the Barouk Cedars and Maasser el Chouf, or plan a full day with our Chouf family day trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who built Beiteddine Palace?

Emir Bashir II Shihab, ruler of the Mount Lebanon Emirate, built it between 1788 and 1818. It later became the summer residence of Lebanon’s president in 1943.

How far is Beiteddine from Beirut?

Beiteddine is roughly 40 to 45 km from Beirut, about an hour by car via the coast road to Damour and then up into the Chouf.

Can you visit Deir el Qamar and Beiteddine on the same day?

Yes. The two face each other across a valley, a five-minute drive apart, with Moussa Castle on the road between them.

Is the Beiteddine festival on in 2026?

No. The organisers cancelled the 2026 edition. The festival normally takes place in the palace courtyards in July.

Sources and further reading

Beiteddine Palace (Wikipedia)

Beiteddine Palace (Destination Shouf)

Deir el Qamar (Destination Shouf)

Moussa Castle (Wikipedia)

A summer on hold: Lebanon’s festivals (Annahar)

Visit Beiteddine in the Chouf: Emir Bashir’s palace and mosaics, nearby Deir el Qamar and Moussa Castle, a day plan, and where to stay and eat.

[170

post-6457","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-travel-in-lebanon
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.7 -
