In summer its villages fill up with returning families, and evenings bring concerts in palace courtyards, saint’s day processions and small harvest festivals where grandmothers sell jam and markouk bread from folding tables. This guide covers the festivals worth planning around and a full family day that works whether or not a festival is on.

A quick reality check before you set your dates: festival calendars in Lebanon move with the security situation. The Beiteddine festival cancelled its 2026 edition, and smaller events are often announced only a few weeks ahead. Follow the organisers’ pages and keep a flexible plan.

Festivals and events in the Chouf

Beiteddine Art Festival

The Chouf’s headline event takes over the courtyards of Beiteddine Palace, built by Emir Bashir II between 1788 and 1818. It normally runs in July, with concerts, musicals and art exhibitions. The 2025 edition ran from 10 to 27 July and ended with a charity dance show, a good fit for families with older children. See the Beiteddine Art Festival listing for its background.

Deir el Qamar’s summer nights

Deir el Qamar, the old capital of Emir Fakhreddine II, hosts a summer festival of music, art and heritage in and around the Midane, its historic square. On the first Sunday of August the town also celebrates the Feast of the Virgin at the church of Saydet el Talle (Our Lady of the Hill), a lovely moment to see local families gathered in their best clothes.

Village festivals in the Shouf Biosphere Reserve

The Shouf Biosphere Reserve works with its villages on small seasonal events, and these are the most family-friendly of all. Recent calendars have included a cherry festival in Jbaa el Shouf in early June, Rehlat el Qameh (a journey through the wheat harvest) in Baadaran in July, Mawasemna in Warhanieh, and a sunset walk in Barouk in mid-August. Expect local produce, crafts, music and plenty of space for children to run around.

Cedar walks and nature days

The reserve covers around 500 square kilometres, about 5 percent of Lebanon, and protects the cedar forests of Barouk, Maasser el Shouf and Ain Zhalta. Guided walks, bike rentals and cedar adoption run through the warmer months, so even on a weekend with no festival there is something organised to join.

Moussa Castle

Older guides list a “Moussa Castle festival”, but the castle is really a year-round attraction rather than an event. Moussa Abdel Karim al-Maamari started building it in 1962 on the hill between Deir el Qamar and Beiteddine and opened it in 1969. Children enjoy its towers and displays, and it makes a good break between the two towns.

A suggested family day

Morning: cedars

Leave Beirut by 8 am and drive up through the Chouf to the cedar reserve entrance at Barouk or Maasser el Shouf. Mornings are cool even in August. Walk an easy loop under the cedars, some of them hundreds of years old, and let the children look for birds and wildflowers. Our guides to the Barouk Cedars and Maasser el Chouf cover the trails.

Midday: lunch in a village

Head down to Barouk or Baakline for a long Lebanese lunch of mezze, grilled meat and fresh fruit. Bouyouti in Maasser Beiteddine serves home-style food in a garden setting with a pool, which suits families who want to slow down.

Afternoon: palace and castle

Visit Beiteddine Palace, with its courtyards, hammam and mosaic museum, then stop at Moussa Castle. Children like the hammam’s domes and the castle’s towers. Finish in Deir el Qamar with an ice cream on the Midane.

Evening: the festival

If a festival night is on, eat early and arrive at the venue at least 45 minutes before the start, as parking on village roads fills quickly. If not, watch the sunset from the terraces above Deir el Qamar before driving home.

Where to eat, stay and shop

Staying the night turns a rushed day into a relaxed one. Besides Bouyouti, Beyt El Jabal offers rooms in a restored stone house in Deir el Qamar. In Baakline, Bkerzay combines eco-hospitality with pottery workshops that children can join. For the drive home, buy cedar honey from Asalli in Barouk and za’atar from Mountain Boons.

Festivals are also the best chance to taste Chouf mountain food at its source. Look for markouk bread baked on a domed saj, manakish with fresh za’atar, kibbeh, kishk, and whatever fruit is in season: cherries in June, then apricots, figs and grapes through the summer. Our Chouf recipes guide explains what to order and how to cook it at home.

Practical tips for families

Bring layers. Evenings in the Chouf can be 10 degrees cooler than Beirut.

Pack snacks and water for the cedar walk, and sturdy shoes for stony paths.

Carry some cash for village festival stalls, which rarely take cards.

Dress modestly for church feasts and when entering religious sites.

Roads are winding. If anyone gets car sick, plan short breaks.

Check current travel advice and the organisers’ channels shortly before you go.

Frequently Asked Questions

What festivals take place in the Chouf?

The best known is the Beiteddine Art Festival in July. Deir el Qamar has a summer festival and the Feast of the Virgin in August, and the Shouf Biosphere Reserve supports small village festivals such as Jbaa’s cherry festival.

Is the Chouf good for a family day trip?

Yes. Easy cedar walks, Beiteddine Palace, Moussa Castle and Deir el Qamar are all within a short drive of each other, about an hour from Beirut.

Is the Chouf Cedar Reserve a UNESCO World Heritage Site?

No. It is part of the Shouf Biosphere Reserve, recognised under UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere programme, which is different from World Heritage status.

When is the best time to visit the Chouf?

June to September for festivals and cool evenings. Spring is lovely for wildflowers, and winter can bring snow to the cedar forests.

Sources and further reading

Shouf Biosphere Reserve (official site)

Deir el Qamar (Destination Shouf)

Beiteddine Art Festival Brings Music to the Mountains (Lebanon Traveler)

Moussa Castle (Wikipedia)

A summer on hold: Lebanon’s festivals (Annahar)

Chouf festivals for families: Beiteddine, Deir el Qamar’s summer nights, cedar reserve village events, plus a full day plan and family tips.

[170

post-6458","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-travel-in-lebanon
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.7 -
