Boats still come into the old harbour on the north side of the peninsula, the morning catch goes straight to the restaurants that face the water, and lunch is a long table of fish, mezze and lemon. Around the city, the coastal plain is planted with banana and citrus groves, so the fruit on the table is usually local too.

A food day here is easy to combine with the Roman ruins that put Tyre on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and with a swim off the long sandy beach south of the old town. This guide covers what to eat, where the food culture lives, and how to plan the day.

Before you go: southern Lebanon has seen repeated airstrikes and evacuation warnings in 2026, and the UK government currently advises against all travel to the South Governorate, which includes Tyre. Check your own government’s advice and local news before planning a trip, and treat this page as a guide for when the situation allows.

What to eat in Tyre

Fish, the way the south likes it

The classic Tyre lunch is whole fish, either fried until crisp or grilled over charcoal, with fried pita, lemon wedges and tarator (tahini whisked with lemon and garlic) for dipping. Small red mullet (sultan ibrahim) is the favourite for frying, and sea bream and grouper go on the grill. Ask what came in that morning rather than ordering from the menu.

Two cooked fish dishes are worth looking for. Sayadieh is fish layered over rice that has been cooked in a dark, onion-sweet stock and topped with toasted pine nuts. Samkeh harra is baked fish under a spicy tahini sauce with coriander, walnuts and chilli, served warm or at room temperature.

Southern mezze and home cooking

The south has its own way with raw kibbeh: kibbeh nayyeh here is often mixed with kammouneh, a spice and herb blend built on cumin, dried mint, marjoram and rose petals that gives it a warm, green flavour. Expect it alongside hummus, moutabal, fattoush with purslane, and plates of green olives and raw onion. Our kibbeh nayyeh recipe shows the base method.

In homes and community kitchens across the south, hreeseh (wheat slow-cooked with meat until it turns into a thick porridge) is cooked in large pots for religious occasions, particularly around Ashura. You will not find it on most menus, but if you are invited to share a bowl, accept.

Bread, sweets and juice

Mornings start at a bakery with manousheh topped with za’atar and oil, or cheese, eaten folded and hot. Later in the day, the sweet shops near the souk fill trays with knefeh (soft cheese under semolina, soaked in syrup), baklava and date maamoul. The orchards around the city mean fresh orange, lemon and banana juices are easy to find in season.

Where to eat

The fishermen’s harbour is the heart of Tyre’s food scene. Le Phénicien, opened in 1973 on the old fishing port, is the city’s best-known seafood restaurant and is known for its fish mezze. Close by, near the lighthouse in the old Christian quarter, Al Fanar is a family-run place with a dining room over the harbour and a deck by the sea.

In summer, simple beach huts along the public beach south of the old city serve grilled fish and meat, cold drinks and argileh, usually from May to September. For a night in town, El Boutique Hotel is a seaside base close to the beaches.

A suggested day

Morning

Arrive early and have manousheh at a bakery near the old souk. Then walk the harbour while the boats unload, and continue to the Al Mina archaeological site on the peninsula, where a colonnaded Roman road and the remains of baths run down to the water.

Afternoon

Lunch at the harbour: fried fish, tarator and a round of mezze, without rushing. Afterwards, drive a few minutes inland to the Al Bass site to see the necropolis, the monumental Roman arch and the hippodrome, which UNESCO describes as one of the largest in the Roman world.

Evening

Spend the end of the day on the beach south of the city, part of the Tyre Coast Nature Reserve, where sea turtles nest in the dunes in summer. Finish with knefeh or ice cream back in town before the drive north.

Take some of the south home

Producers from the region make good souvenirs for the pantry. Al Baydar in Bint Jbeil cleans and packs local bulgur, freekeh and lentils, Go Baladi makes goat labneh and cheese in South Lebanon, and Arak du Marje distils arak from Marjeyoun vines. On the way back to Beirut, Kanaan Sweets in Saida is a family sweets business going back to 1946. You can browse more at Lebanese sweets and arak and spirits.

Practical tips

Go on a weekday if you can. Harbour restaurants fill up with families from all over the south on Sundays.

Carry some cash. Smaller bakeries, juice stands and beach huts may not take cards.

Fish is usually priced by weight. Choose your fish and ask for the price before it goes on the grill.

Summer is hot and humid on the coast. Visit the ruins in the morning and keep the afternoon for lunch and the beach.

Dress modestly for the souk and religious sites. Beachwear belongs on the beach.

Nearby

Saida (Sidon) is about 40 km north and makes a natural stop on the way back, with its Sea Castle and old souk; see our Sidon Sea Castle guide. For more time on Tyre’s ancient sites, read our guide to Tyre’s history.

Frequently Asked Questions

What food is Tyre known for?

Tyre is known for fresh fish from its old harbour, fried or grilled and served with tahini sauce, as well as sayadieh, southern-style kibbeh nayyeh with kammouneh, and syrupy sweets like knefeh.

Where is the best place to eat seafood in Tyre?

The old fishermen’s harbour is the main seafood area. Le Phénicien, open since 1973, and Al Fanar near the lighthouse are two long-established choices with views over the water.

Is it safe to visit Tyre right now?

In 2026 the UK government advises against all travel to Lebanon’s South Governorate, which includes Tyre, because of continued airstrikes. Check your own government’s advice and recent news before going.

Can you do Tyre as a day trip from Beirut?

Yes. Tyre is about 80 km south of Beirut, roughly 1.5 hours by car, so you can see the ruins, have a long lunch and be back in the evening.

Sources and further reading

Tyre, UNESCO World Heritage Centre

Modern Tyre (Time Out Beirut)

Le Phénicien is awarded by l’Académie Libanaise de la Gastronomie (Hospitality News)

Lebanon travel advice (UK FCDO)

Where to eat in Tyre, south Lebanon: harbour seafood, sayadieh, southern kibbeh with kammouneh, knefeh, plus a simple food day plan near the ruins.

[170

post-6523","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-travel-in-lebanon
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.7 -
