These are the ten natural places most worth your time.

Trip Information

Region

Across Lebanon

Best season

Spring (April to June) and autumn

Good for

Hikers, families, nature lovers

For a small country, Lebanon has a remarkable range of landscapes. Within two hours of Beirut you can walk among cedars that have stood for centuries, look down into a valley lined with medieval hermitages, or stand under a waterfall that drops through a natural rock bridge. Many of the best places are protected reserves run by local committees, with marked trails, guides and village guesthouses nearby.

This list replaces our older version, which mixed a few true natural wonders with small picnic parks that are hard to recommend today. It keeps the classics and adds the reserves that do the most to protect Lebanon’s forests.

How we chose

We picked places that are genuinely natural or green, open to visitors, and either protected or long established. We checked them against official sources such as UNESCO and the reserves’ own sites, and left out commercial parks we could not confirm are still operating. Conditions can change, so check before you go, especially in winter and during periods of insecurity.

1. Cedars of God (Bsharri)

The Forest of the Cedars of God sits at around 2,000 metres on the slopes of Mount Makmel, east of Bsharri. It is one of the last remnants of the great cedar forests of antiquity, and the cedar it protects, Cedrus libani, is mentioned more than a hundred times in the Bible. The grove is small, but some trees are many centuries old, and a walking path loops between them.

Tip: in winter the road continues to the ski slopes above the forest, so expect snow from December to March. Pair a visit with a tasting at Mont d’Almaz in nearby Beit Menzer. See our Cedars of God trail guide.

2. Qadisha Valley (North Lebanon)

Directly below the cedars, the Qadisha Valley, the Holy Valley, cuts a deep gorge through the mountains. For centuries it sheltered monks and hermits, and monasteries such as Qannoubine, Saint Anthony of Qozhaya and Our Lady of Hawqa cling to its cliffs. UNESCO listed the valley and the cedar forest together in 1998.

Tip: the trail along the valley floor from Qannoubine is mostly gentle, but the climb back out is steep. Wear proper shoes and start early. More in our Qadisha Valley guide.

3. Baatara Gorge Waterfall (Tannourine)

Near the village of Balaa in the Tannourine area, a stream drops about 255 metres into a limestone sinkhole, passing behind three natural rock bridges stacked one above the other. It is one of the most photographed natural sights in the country and was only mapped by a French biospeleologist in 1952.

Tip: the falls are at their best in spring, roughly March to May, when snowmelt feeds them. By late summer they can slow to a trickle. A short path and steps lead to viewing points; stay behind the railings.

4. Tannourine Cedars Forest Nature Reserve (Batroun district)

Above Tannourine, this reserve protects one of the largest and densest cedar forests left in Lebanon, spread over steep slopes. It feels wilder and quieter than the Cedars of God, with trails through the trees and views over the Batroun mountains.

Tip: combine it with Baatara in one day. See our Tannourine cedar forest guide.

5. Shouf Biosphere Reserve (Chouf)

The Shouf Biosphere Reserve covers about 500 square kilometres, roughly 5 per cent of Lebanon, and takes in two protected areas, the Al-Shouf Cedar Reserve and the Ammiq Wetland in the West Bekaa. Its cedar forests at Barouk, Maasser el Shouf and Ain Zhalta are the easiest to reach from Beirut.

Tip: the reserve offers guided walks, bike trails, birdwatching at Ammiq during spring and autumn migration, and an Adopt a Cedar programme. For longer walks, see our Chouf hiking guide.

6. Jabal Moussa Biosphere Reserve (Keserwan)

Jabal Moussa rises above the Adonis Valley in the Keserwan mountains, a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 2009. Its trails pass through oak and pine woodland, along streams and past old Roman inscriptions, and the reserve works with seven surrounding villages on guesthouses and local products.

Tip: it is about an hour from Beirut, making it one of the best half-day hikes near the capital. Buy honey, jams and herbs from the village producers at the entrance.

7. Horsh Ehden Nature Reserve (Zgharta)

Above the town of Ehden, Horsh Ehden is a mixed mountain forest of cedar, fir, juniper and wild apple, with springs and limestone outcrops. It has some of the richest plant life in the country, including rare orchids in late spring.

Tip: Ehden’s main square is lively on summer evenings, making this an easy weekend trip. See our Ehden trails guide.

8. Jeita Grotto (Keserwan)

Just 20 km north of Beirut, Jeita is a pair of limestone caves. You walk through the upper grotto among stalactites and stalagmites and take a boat ride on the underground river in the lower one. The site was closed for long periods in 2024 and 2025 while its management changed hands, and it reopened in November 2025 after a safety inspection.

Tip: photos are not allowed inside the caves. Check that the site is open before you drive up, as it has closed at short notice in the past.

9. Raouche and Pigeon Rocks (Beirut)

Beirut’s natural landmark is a pair of great limestone rocks standing in the sea off the Raouche cliffs, one with a wide arch. The Corniche promenade along the top is the city’s favourite walk, and nearby shores have yielded the oldest evidence of people in Beirut.

Tip: come at sunset. Our seaside Beirut guide covers the full walk from Zaitunay Bay.

10. Sanayeh Garden (Beirut)

Officially the René Moawad Garden, Sanayeh is one of the oldest public gardens in Beirut, with tall trees, paths, benches and a play area next to the Ras Beirut neighbourhoods. It is a welcome patch of green in a crowded city and a meeting point for families on weekends.

Tip: early mornings are quiet and cool. Pair a walk with lunch in nearby Hamra.

Tips

Spring is the best season for almost all of these places: waterfalls are full, wildflowers are out, and the heat has not yet arrived.

Reserves usually charge a small entry fee that funds rangers and trails. Bring cash.

Mountain roads above 1,500 metres can be closed by snow between December and March.

Go with a local guide or a group such as the Lebanon Mountain Trail Association for longer walks.

Take your rubbish home and stay on marked trails, especially in cedar forests where seedlings are fragile.

Check travel advice before heading to border regions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most beautiful natural place in Lebanon?

Many people would name the Qadisha Valley with the Cedars of God above it, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Baatara Gorge Waterfall and Jeita Grotto are close rivals.

Where can I see cedar trees in Lebanon?

The best places are the Cedars of God near Bsharri, the Tannourine Cedars Forest Nature Reserve, the Shouf Biosphere Reserve at Barouk and Maasser el Shouf, and Horsh Ehden.

When is the best time to see Baatara Gorge Waterfall?

Spring, roughly March to May, when melting snow feeds the falls. In late summer and autumn the flow can be very low.

Is Jeita Grotto open?

Jeita Grotto reopened in November 2025 after an inspection. It has closed at short notice before, so check its status before you go.

Sources and further reading

Ouadi Qadisha and the Forest of the Cedars of God, UNESCO

Shouf Biosphere Reserve

Jabal Moussa Biosphere Reserve

Jeita Grotto cleared for reentry, LBCI

Cedar forests, a UNESCO valley, a waterfall through three stone bridges and Beirut’s green spaces: the 10 best parks and nature attractions in Lebanon.

[170

post-6532","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-travel-in-lebanon
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.7 -
