Summer nights bring orchestras and Arab pop stars into Roman temples, palace courtyards and Crusader-era harbours. Winter has its own classical music season in the hills above Beirut, and every village seems to have a feast day with music, food stalls and fireworks. This guide covers the main cultural events, where they happen, and how to plan a trip around them.

One honest note first. The calendar depends heavily on the security situation. In June 2026, Annahar reported that the Beiteddine festival had cancelled its 2026 edition, Baalbeck was postponing its summer programme, Ehdeniyat was skipping its usual dates and Byblos was reworking its line-up around local artists. Treat every date as provisional and check the official pages close to your trip.

The big summer festivals

Baalbeck International Festival (Bekaa)

This is the grandfather of them all. Organising began in 1955 and the festival took its name in 1956, under a committee led by Aimée Kettaneh. Performances are staged in the Roman acropolis of Baalbeck, with the columns of the Temple of Jupiter and the walls of the Temple of Bacchus as the backdrop. The civil war stopped the festival for about a quarter of a century, and it came back in 1997. Programmes mix classical music, opera, dance, jazz and the much-loved Lebanese Nights. See the Baalbeck International Festival listing, and pair a concert with a daytime visit to the ruins.

Byblos International Festival (Jbeil)

Byblos puts its stage by the sea, next to the old city and its Crusader castle. It leans towards international pop, rock and Arab headliners, with free “Off Byblos” events for emerging artists in some years. Make an evening of it: walk the old souk at sunset, eat fish by the harbour, then go to the show. The Byblos International Festival page has more.

Beiteddine Art Festival (Chouf)

Held in the courtyards of Beiteddine Palace, the 19th century seat of Emir Bashir II, this festival usually runs in July. The 2025 edition, for example, ran from 10 to 27 July with concerts, a musical and two art exhibitions. It is the most atmospheric of the big three, as the audience sits inside an Ottoman-era palace under the mountain sky. Read more on the Beiteddine Art Festival listing and in our guide to Beiteddine village.

Ehdeniyat (Ehden, North Lebanon)

Ehden is a cool summer town at the edge of the Qadisha region, and Ehdeniyat has traditionally taken over its August evenings with concerts. It is a good excuse to combine music with the Horsh Ehden reserve and the valley monasteries.

Batroun and Jounieh

Batroun’s summer festival has used the town’s old Roman-style amphitheatre, the Mina area and the port as venues, with dates spread from July into September in past years. Bnoss Jounieh, in Jounieh, has run from late June through July. Both are easy evening trips from Beirut and suit people who want a beach day followed by a show.

Winter and city events

The Al Bustan Festival was founded in 1994 and is the country’s main winter season for classical music, opera, chamber music and dance, based at the Al Bustan Hotel in Beit Mery. It usually falls in late winter, when the coast is mild and the mountains are white.

Beirut Holidays is a summer series of big-name Arab concerts. In 2026 it moved to a new site in Antelias and Naccache, north of Beirut, after its waterfront venue was used to shelter displaced families. On 21 June, Fête de la Musique brings free concerts to streets and squares in Beirut and other towns.

Culture in Lebanon is not only festivals. The National Museum of Beirut holds Phoenician sarcophagi and Roman mosaics, and the Sursock Museum in Achrafieh shows modern and contemporary Lebanese art. Beirut’s galleries open new shows through the year, so a rainy-season trip can still be full.

Village feasts and religious celebrations

Some of the warmest cultural moments happen far from ticket booths. Christian villages light bonfires for Eid al-Saleeb (the Feast of the Cross) in mid-September. In Deir el Qamar, the Feast of the Virgin at Saydet el Talle falls on the first Sunday of August. The Shouf Biosphere Reserve supports small village festivals, such as the cherry festival in Jbaa el Shouf in June and a wheat harvest day in Baadaran in July, where families sell mooneh, sweets and crafts. During Ramadan, towns like Saida and Tripoli stay awake late with iftar tables, sweets and lantern-lit streets.

A suggested week built around the festivals

Days 1 and 2: Beirut

Start with the National Museum and the Sursock Museum, walk Gemmayzeh and Mar Mikhael in the evening, and catch a Beirut Holidays concert if one is on.

Days 3 and 4: Byblos and the coast

Spend a day in the old city of Byblos and its archaeological site, then stay for the festival night. On the next day, swim in Batroun and check the Batroun programme.

Days 5 and 6: Chouf

Visit Deir el Qamar and Beiteddine Palace, walk among the cedars of the Shouf Biosphere Reserve, and sleep in a stone guesthouse. Our page on festivals in Chouf has a family-friendly day plan.

Day 7: Baalbeck

Drive over the mountains into the Bekaa, see the temples by day, and stay for the evening performance when the festival is running.

Practical tips

Big festival tickets usually sell through Virgin Ticketing and the festivals’ own websites. Popular nights sell out, so book once the programme is out.

Mountain venues like Beiteddine and Ehden get cool after dark, even in July. Bring a light jacket.

Traffic out of Beirut on summer weekends is heavy. Leave early, and arrange your return drive in advance.

Dress modestly for churches, mosques and religious feasts: shoulders and knees covered.

Check your government’s travel advice and the festival’s own channels before you travel, as programmes can change at short notice.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is festival season in Lebanon?

The big outdoor festivals run mostly in July and August, with some events from late June to September. Al Bustan Festival is the main winter event, held in Beit Mery.

Are Lebanon’s summer festivals happening in 2026?

Several were disrupted. In June 2026 Beiteddine cancelled its edition, Baalbeck postponed its summer programme and Ehdeniyat skipped its usual dates, so check official pages before planning.

What is the oldest festival in Lebanon?

The Baalbeck International Festival, which took its name in 1956 and stages performances in the Roman temples of Baalbeck.

How do I buy festival tickets in Lebanon?

Most festivals sell tickets through their official websites and Virgin Ticketing outlets. Book early for headline concerts, which often sell out.

Sources and further reading

A summer on hold: Lebanon’s festivals between cancellation, delay, and fragile continuity (Annahar)

Baalbeck International Festival (official site)

Al Bustan Festival (official site)

Byblos International Festival (official site)

8 Summer Festivals to Catch in Lebanon (Lebanon Traveler)

Lebanon’s main cultural events: Baalbeck, Byblos and Beiteddine festivals, Al Bustan in winter, village feasts, and how to plan a trip around them.

[170

post-6456","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-travel-in-lebanon
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.7 -
