These are the long-running counters and dishes worth crossing the city for, with a plan for one hungry day.

Place Information

Region

Beirut: Achrafieh, Hamra, Gemmayzeh

Best time to visit

Year round, mornings and evenings

Time needed

One day, or a few evenings

Good for

Food lovers, families, budget travelers

Getting there

Central Beirut, by taxi or on foot

Some of the best food in Beirut costs very little and comes wrapped in paper. The city’s street food is mostly made in small bakeries and sandwich counters that have been doing one thing for decades: a falafel shop opened in 1933, an Armenian bakery from 1946, sweet makers who trace their recipes to the 1800s. Locals have strong loyalties, and the queue is usually the best review.

The old idea of eating in “downtown” Beirut does not quite match today’s city. The rebuilt Beirut Souks and Martyrs’ Square are smart but quiet, and the real eating happens in the neighbourhoods around them: Achrafieh and Gemmayzeh to the east, Hamra to the west, and Armenian Bourj Hammoud across the river. This guide also folds in the family-friendly local food spots from our older day trip post.

What to eat

Manoushe for breakfast

The day starts with manoushe (plural manakish), flatbread baked in a hot oven with za’atar and olive oil, or with melting akkawi cheese, or half and half. Neighbourhood bakeries (furn) make them to order in minutes. Ask for tomatoes, mint and olives rolled inside the za’atar one. Hamra’s Furn Abed al Aziz is a well known stop. You can also make your own with our za’atar manakeesh recipe.

Falafel

Falafel Sahyoun on Damascus Road has been frying falafel since 1933, and two family shops now stand side by side on the old Green Line, each with its loyal customers. The sandwich is simple: hot falafel, tomatoes, parsley, pink pickled turnip and tarator (tahini sauce) in thin bread. Falafel Freiha near Sassine Square in Achrafieh is the other old name in the east of the city.

Lahm bi ajin and fatayer

Ichkhanian Bakery in Zokak el Blat has been baking since 1946 and is famous for lahm bi ajin, thin meat pies seasoned the Armenian way, with a version finished with pomegranate. Around Bliss Street near AUB, snack counters sell spinach fatayer, triangle pies sharp with sumac and lemon.

Shawarma and kafta

Shawarma is everywhere, but the classic late night stop is Barbar on Spears Street, open around the clock and known for its kafta sandwich, shawarma and fresh juices. Ask for toum (garlic sauce) and pickles. Boubouffe in Achrafieh grills its shawarma over charcoal.

Foul, hummus and fatteh

Weekend breakfast in Beirut often means a plate of foul mudammas (warm fava beans with garlic, lemon and olive oil), msabbaha (warm chickpeas in tahini) or fatteh, served with raw onion, mint, radishes and a basket of bread. Small specialist shops open at dawn and close by noon once the pots are empty. Ask for a little of each to share.

Sweets and booza

For something sweet, try knefeh, warm semolina pastry over soft cheese soaked in syrup, eaten in a sesame bun for breakfast. Amal Bohsali, a family name in sweets since 1878, makes it in the Nablus style. Al Antabli in the Beirut Souks has served fruit cocktails topped with ashta (clotted cream) since 1936. In summer, finish with booza, stretchy ice cream thickened with sahlab and flavoured with mastic, at Hanna Mitri in Achrafieh.

A suggested eating day

Morning

Start in Hamra with a cheese and za’atar manoushe from a corner bakery and a coffee. Walk down Bliss Street for a fatayer and a fruit cup with ashta. If it is Saturday, take a taxi to Souk el Tayeb, Lebanon’s first farmers’ market, which has moved from Mar Mikhael to a larger space in Jisr al-Wati, where producers from across the country sell cheese, bread, mouneh and hot snacks.

Afternoon

Head east to Damascus Road for a falafel sandwich at Sahyoun, then walk up to Gemmayzeh. Le Chef on Gouraud Street has served home-style Lebanese dishes such as mloukhieh and stews for decades, and is the place for a proper plate lunch. Later, take a taxi across the river to Bourj Hammoud for Armenian snacks like sujuk and basterma sandwiches.

Evening

Finish with booza in Achrafieh, or do it the Beirut way and end the night at Barbar with a kafta sandwich long after midnight.

Practical tips

Most small places are cash only. Carry Lebanese pounds in small notes and some US dollars.

Eat where the turnover is high, especially for falafel and shawarma, which taste best straight off the fryer or spit.

Many bakeries are busiest from 7 to 10 am. Bread runs out early at the best ones.

With kids, a manoushe stop and a booza stop are reliable wins, and most counters will make plain cheese versions without spice.

Vegetarians eat very well here: falafel, manakish, fatayer, foul and hummus are all meat free.

Opening times shift often. Check a place’s recent posts before crossing the city for it.

Nearby

Walk off lunch along the seafront with our seaside Beirut guide. Most are sold from small bakeries and counters rather than street stalls.

Where is the best falafel in Beirut?

Falafel Sahyoun on Damascus Road, open since 1933, is the most famous. Falafel Freiha near Sassine Square in Achrafieh is another long-running favourite.

Is street food in Beirut cheap?

Yes, a manoushe, falafel sandwich or fatayer is one of the cheapest meals in the city. Bring cash in small notes, as many counters do not take cards.

Is Beirut street food good for kids and vegetarians?

Very. Cheese manoushe, falafel, hummus and booza suit most children, and many classic snacks are naturally vegetarian.

Sources and further reading

Shawarma, Falafel and Street Food Favorites in Beirut, Lebanon Traveler

The top 5 historic street food spots in Beirut, Culture Trip

Souk el Tayeb moves to the outskirts of Beirut, L’Orient Today

Where to eat street food and local food in Beirut: falafel since 1933, manoushe, lahm bi ajin, knefeh and booza, plus a one-day eating plan.

[170

post-6531","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-travel-in-lebanon
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.7 -
