Here is how to see it, and what else to do nearby.

Place Information

Region

Jezzine, South Lebanon

Best time to visit

March to June, when the falls run strongest

Time needed

Half a day to a full day

Good for

Nature, families, crafts, wine

Getting there

About 1.5 hours by car from Beirut via Saida

Jezzine is a mountain town in South Lebanon, about 22 km inland from Saida (Sidon) at around 950 metres. Locals call it the town of the waterfalls, and with good reason: its main fall drops straight off a cliff on the edge of town, close enough to hear from the streets. Around it you will find pine forests, red-roofed stone houses, a famous craft of hand-carved cutlery and some of the highest vineyards in the south.

The old version of this page claimed a drop of 250 metres. That is not right. Sources put the main fall at somewhere between about 74 and 90 metres, which is still among the tallest in Lebanon and a striking sight when the water is running hard.

What to see

Jezzine Waterfall

The waterfall plunges from the cliff below the town into a green gorge. For the classic view, use the viewing balcony on George Aziz Avenue. To get closer, take the road near the Lady of Maabour statue and follow the short walk down towards the base. The flow is strongest in late winter and spring, after rain and snowmelt, and much thinner by late summer.

Fakhreddine’s Cave

Close to the waterfall is the cave where Emir Fakhreddine II is said to have hidden from Ottoman troops before his capture in the 1630s. It is a short visit, but the story of Lebanon’s great emir makes it worth the stop.

Lady of Maabour statue

At the western entrance to town, a statue of the Virgin Mary by sculptor Youssef Ghossoub holds a key to Jezzine. The spot gives wide views over the town, the valley and, in the distance, the Bkassine pine forest.

Heritage in the town centre

On the main square, the municipal serail dates from 1898 and shows Ottoman-era design. The Kanaan Mansion, built in 1892 by Suleiman Bey Kanaan, is known for its arcades. The Farid Serhal Palace, built in the second half of the 20th century in an eclectic oriental style, was damaged in the war and partly restored. Saint Maroun Church dates from the 18th century.

Jezzine cutlery

Jezzine has made knives and cutlery for centuries, with decorated handles, traditionally of bone, often shaped like a bird. The craft is linked to the Haddad family, who are said to have begun in 1770. Look for workshops and shops in town, or browse the sets made by Haddad Cutlery, a Jezzine family workshop known for its phoenix-shaped handles.

Bkassine Pine Forest

Just next to Jezzine, Bkassine is one of the largest pine forests in Lebanon and the area’s main source of pine nuts. It has walking and biking trails, picnic spots and a campsite, and it is a cool, shaded place to spend a summer afternoon.

A suggested day

Morning

Drive down the coast to Saida, then turn inland and climb to Jezzine. Start at the Lady of Maabour statue for the view, then walk down towards the waterfall while the light is soft.

Afternoon

Have lunch in town, then visit Fakhreddine’s Cave, the serail and the Kanaan Mansion. Stop at a cutlery shop before heading to Bkassine for a walk under the pines.

Evening

End the day with a wine tasting. Karam Wines, founded in 2002 as the first winery in South Lebanon, grows high-altitude grapes including the native Meksassi. Terre Brune is another Jezzine winery making wine and arak. Contact them before you go to arrange a visit.

Where to eat and what to buy

Jezzine’s restaurants are mostly family-run and serve South Lebanese mountain food: kibbeh, grilled meat, fresh salads, labneh with local olive oil, and fruit from the orchards. For mooneh to take home, Mounit Baytna in nearby Kfarhouna makes jams, preserves and pantry staples the way a Lebanese home kitchen would. Bkassine pine nuts make a good gift too.

Practical tips

Visit between March and June to see the waterfall at full strength. Late summer is greener in the forests but the fall is thinner.

The path towards the base of the fall can be wet and slippery. Wear shoes with good grip and keep children close.

Jezzine is in South Lebanon. Check your government’s current travel advice for the area before you go, as conditions there can change quickly.

The town’s tourism office can help with directions and local guides.

Combine the trip with a morning in Saida’s old souk and sea castle on the way.

Springs and the road north

Jezzine owes its waterfalls to its springs. The town’s main water source supplies its homes and farms, and on the road towards the Shouf the Azibeh Spring is a well-known stop where families picnic in summer. From there the mountain road continues north into the Chouf, so you can link Jezzine with a night near Beiteddine and make a two-day loop through the southern mountains.

Nearby

Saida is about 30 to 40 minutes down the mountain, with its sea castle and souks. See our guide to Sidon Sea Castle, our list of the best waterfalls in Lebanon, and the best wineries to visit in Lebanon.

Frequently Asked Questions

How tall is the Jezzine waterfall?

Sources give between about 74 and 90 metres for the main drop, making it one of the tallest waterfalls in Lebanon. Older claims of 250 metres are wrong.

When is the best time to see the Jezzine waterfall?

Late winter and spring, roughly March to June, after rain and snowmelt. By late summer the flow is much weaker.

How far is Jezzine from Beirut?

Jezzine is about 22 km from Saida. From Beirut the drive goes south along the coast to Saida and then up the mountain, about 1.5 hours without traffic.

What is Jezzine famous for?

Its waterfall, the Bkassine pine forest and its pine nuts, and its traditional hand-carved cutlery with bird-shaped handles.

Sources and further reading

Jezzine (Wikipedia)

A Selection of the Best Touristic Sites in Jezzine (Lebanon Traveler)

Top 5 Attractions in Jezzine (Lebanon Traveler)

Visit the Jezzine waterfall in South Lebanon: best viewpoints, Fakhreddine’s Cave, Bkassine pine forest, cutlery workshops, wineries and tips.

[170

post-6461","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-travel-in-lebanon
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.7 -
